The Importance of Setting Goals at Work

Remember the feeling in the air when your company was able to reach a new height? Or when the entry-level Sales Rep on your team was able to successfully close his first deal? If we truly dig in and define why these accomplishments came to be, we’ll see that it often boils down to two words and one very important process: Goal. Setting.

The direction your company takes, whether good or bad, is in part, defined by the goals established from within. And if your company has yet to incorporate a defined set of goals to guide each department’s functions, perhaps it’s time to do so.

The direction your company takes, whether good or bad, is in part, defined by the goals established from within.

At GRS, one of our core values is, “we are extremely goal-oriented and expect to win.” Short and sweet, this core value we’ve established sets the tone for how we operate in our workdays.

Not only does goal setting provide clear direction and focus for your employees, but it also promotes a feeling of self-mastery and makes reaching those defined objectives more rewarding. If everyone on your team is eager to reach their goals, imagine the possibilities.

Below, we’ve rounded up just some of the many benefits that goal-setting provides.

Motivation

Without a strategic plan in place and with no objective to work toward, the likelihood of time being wasted on the job is through the roof. On the flip side, supporting your employees to reach certain goals is a surefire way to boost motivation, morale, and productivity. What’s more, providing direction and guidance to achieve specific targets increases confidence in the tasks being completed.

Purpose

No matter the role, everyone wants to feel like an important cog in the wheel. By including all team members, regardless of titles or seniority, into the planning and goal-defining process, your employees are likely to feel more valued and unified as a team. Plus, this type of collaboration increases the chances of your staff seeing the value in teamwork and innovation.

Performance

When success is within reach and there is a milestone to accomplish, employees are more apt to be proactive, creative, and high-performing. With support and recognition tailored around each goal and the opportunity to celebrate achievements, employee performance is likely to skyrocket.

Measurable Success

Another extremely beneficial aspect of goal setting is the ability to measure success and to see where certain processes may need improvement. SMART goals (a.k.a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) create an effective way to evaluate the results of certain projects or procedures and the progress that was made along the way.

Direction

Think of goal setting as an essential roadmap that is there to guide your team members toward new heights. Company-wide goals are important, but having one-on-one evaluations with each team member, and creating a clear roadmap tailored around their motivations, is a key component in helping move your organization forward.

At GRS, we’ve found that creating a culture where our team members are motivated to reach their goals has ultimately been a distinctive factor in helping us achieve new milestones. The same is true for all organizations, big or small. When employees are more engaged and motivated in their work, the opportunities for success are limitless.
